The Hunt for Silence and a Good Meal

Castello di Vicarello

 episode 2

📍 Province of Grosseto, Italy

Tuscany, Italy- The famous region depicted in so many movies and the subject of dreams for people worldwide. Imagine the rolling hills filled with those elegant tall deep-green cypress trees and terracotta rooftops against the setting sun’s perfect backdrop. Now throw in a castle and don’t even get me started on the food…

It isn’t a fairytale. This is Tuscany.

This trip and hunt were memorable, for many reasons. Aside from some luxurious accommodations to juxtapose the typical conditions while on a hunt, it was also one of great anticipation and moral quarrels.

The hunting area is fenced, about 300 hectares or 740 acres in total.

Here, the wild boar live "free" so to speak but not free.

I'm contemplating if this is right? Is this hunting? Is it canned hunting? How do I explain this to hunters and non-hunters alike? How do I justify this?

This is volatile ammunition in all anti-hunters guns for sure!

Off we went in good spirit and in hopes of enlightenment.

So what do we call this? Hunting? Grocery shopping? Meals by the way of hunting? I don't know. The interpretation lies with the individual. Is this for everyone? it is not.

This type of hunting is not for me, though now with the butchering, the cooking class, and the meal in front of us, it all comes together and makes sense.

Here at Castello di Vicarello, “You only shoot what you eat, and nothing goes to waste” as Corso, the youngest of 3 sons, who has taken over the operational management of the hotel, says. He was our gracious host and chef; something tells me this kid is on to something.

A lot of young and older hunters come here for the whole experience and because it's a hunt they can physically do, they often succeed. Others come for the butchering and cooking part only.

No matter your personal opinion on wild boar hunting, it's undoubtedly good for the hunting reputation, that an upscale place like Castello di Vicarello openly exposes guests to wild game dishes and tells the stories of our shared hunting lifestyle.

Special thanks to Oliver Goldshmidt and his one-of-a-kind creations. I’m loving this knife he gifted me! Watch it make its debut on this episode.

And special thanks to Matt Hranek and Yolanda Edwards for sharing this special adventure with me.
